Review: X-Men Anime

Posted by: Cybermario @ 1:04 pm Share in Facebook

Another of the Marvel Comics anime arrived and it was a pleasure to watch, specially being a huge fan of the X-Men universe. As you can expect the anime seems to follow a continuity with the X-Men movies, so Magneto is locked in jail and he is not the main villain in this story arc. Directed by Fuminori Kizaki (Afro Samurai) we get a nice dvd set with a total of 12 episodes of mutant action!

X-Men

Taking place right after the tragic events leading to the death of Jean Grey, the X-Men are in shambles, the team reunites again and visits Japan to investigate strange disappearances of young mutants in that region, along with a strange energy that’s blocking Cerebro capabilities to track mutants in that region of the country.
As the X-Men start the search for the young mutants, they discover the U-Men are related to the mystery, and the horrors involved in the abductions. There we will met a young girl Hisako Ichiki, she possess the ability to produce a psionic energy armor around her body, along with her they find a captive Emma Frost who is not very welcome to the group due to their ties with the Inner Circle (see The Dark Phoenix Saga)
Both, Emma and Hisako decide to join the X-Men in search of the truth, and the truth behind all the mysteries will be truly shocking and may lead to the end of the planet earth as a new omega level mutant goes wild.

X-Men

Animation: 7.5/10
By the most part Mad House did a great job with the animation and delivers quality most of the time. Character design is not entirely bad, but to be honest i wish the uniform design was more like the comics, they lacked a lot of the respective “X” style that even the movies portrayed.
The art style from Fuminori Kizaki is very distinctive specially with the villains, and for sure will be of the liking of Afro Samurai fans.

X-Men

Sound: 7/10
The intro has a good beat but then again no lyrics (same as Ironman) which in my opinion takes away points from the anime, I can understand the need to keep it attractive to an american audience into anime who may not be a fan of J-music overall.
Other than that sound effects and voice acting are top notch, whatever is your cup of tea sub or dub both audio tracks are good, we have Scott Porter (The Good Wife, Friday Night Lights, Caprica) lending his voice to Cyclops in the english version.

Extras:
This 2-disc set contains all 12 episodes plus nice bonus features including a special talk session with the director’s of the X-Men and Blade Marvel Anime, The Marvel Anime Universe, Re-Examining The X-Men and X-Men, A Team of Outsiders.

Features:
Audio; Japanese, English 5.1 Dolby Digital. Subtitles; English, English SDH

X-Men

What they did right
Starting the first episode of the anime by tying it with the end of the Dark Phoenix saga with the X-Men live action movies was a wise decision by the director Fuminori Kizaki (Afro Samurai)giving us old fans of the comic and newcomers to the X-Men universe a good starting point for the series.
Wolverine is a badass, Storm looks very sexy and Cyclops is the emo he’s always been, just like in the movies, and that it’s all good! *winks*

What they did wrong
May not be exactly wrong perse, can understand they had to adapt the story and change certain characters from the Marvel universe to be appealing for a japanese audience that may not be familiar with the comics, still i’m not sure this was completely necessary.
So probably giving us a new villain that’s new to the Marvel universe could have been much better without messing with the continuity of the comics, something purist and followers of the comics may not like. Then again like in most cases this could be seen as a parallel universe.

Final Thoughts
X-Men anime is very dynamic and it’s sure to bring action to the fan of the comics, so if you love Marvel comics, liked the movies but are new to the anime, this show is a good option to approach the genre. No, Beast will not fly and sign the “nyan cat” song… thanks for reading!

We give the anime 8 riceballs out of ten!

Sumioni: Demon Arts Review (Vita)

Posted by: Cybermario @ 8:56 pm Share in Facebook

Developed by Acquire and XSEED Games we have got this new adventure for the PS Vita called Sumioni: Demon Arts. With an Okami dejavu and a creative use of the hardware capabilities of the portable, this game takes us back to the ancient feudal Japan, fighting armies, mythical beasts and what not. Does this title have what it takes to keep you entertained? Let’s find out!

Sumioni

Gameplay
Sumioni takes us back to ancient Japan, as we take contol of this demon ink like character named Agura in a side scrolling game for the PS Vita. After years of slumber Agura wakes up to destroy an evil force in the ancient Japan.
Controls feel good, by using the left analog you can move, x to jump and square to attack, simple as that and without a big learning curve, simple pick up and play. Sumioni makes use of the touch-screen in a very creative way, by using your finger you can draw ink lines to help you kill enemies, avoid deadly traps, reach higher areas and so on. You can also delete your lines with your finger but they disappear by themselves after a time.
Ink is not infinite, you get ink jars as you destroy objects, enemies and overall everything in the enviroment, as well ying yang symbols.

Sumioni

Although you can’t lose time by stopping to destroy everything in your path as some stages require you to dash through it fast.
By using ink you can draw symbols and with them summon beasts to aid you in battle and unleash powerful attacks, but that is not all, by drawing over an enemy it can set the ink on fire, damaging monsters, something i’m in love with!
Ink is not the only weapon you have at your disposal, you can use water to delete ink or to put out fire to avoid damage, just like ink you use water with your finger, pretty handy.
The game has a ranking system by using stars from one (poor) to three (excellent). Obtaining three stars will unlock new paths to advance and progress to get one of six different endings. I will elaborate more on this below.

You will find yourself fighting giants, archers, soldiers and destroying fortifications and castles, some levels can get really tough giving the player a good challenge and that is always welcomed.

Sumioni

Graphics 8.5/10
The graphics for Sumioni are delightful, specially if you like traditional Japanese art like that one well known scroll of the ancient Japan known as Sumi-e. Graphics are not bland blank and white but there are gorgeous and colorful backgrounds and effects, giving the game a very unique style. What else can we say but eye candy! Gorgeous, simply gorgeous!

Music 8/10
Just like the art the music is a mix of both, traditional and catchy modern tunes with sounds that are so typical of the Japanese culture and they complement gameplay to perfection.

Sumioni

Downsides
If any, Sumioni opening is composed of still images, although the art is pretty good all you see for over 3 minutes is an intro composed of images and lots, lots of text… usually I don’t mind but really this does not make you feel immersed or interested in the storyline that much, it can be quite boring.
Some bosses appear to be just upgraded versions of early bosses, more variety would have been beneficial in both variety and replay value, once you learn to defeat some of the early bosses, the improved versions are not so hard.
As amusing and interesting the use of ink can be, after a time you will find yourself using the same patterns or lines to move forward which tend to be repetitive after a while.
The stars system can be a real pain as you need to score perfect to unlock a new path, if you don’t do it you will never be able to see all the endings nor enjoy the full experience and this can lead to frustration. Nobody likes to finish a game under 25 minutes just because you can’t score perfect right?

Sumioni

Overall
Sumioni: Demon Arts although it’s not a excellent title, it is a good choice with interesting gameplay, if you own a Vita it’s worth to give it a try. This franchise promises a lot and maybe if they can improve and nail down their mistakes on this release they could bring us an amazing sequel.
Can’t say I hate the game as i’m in love with the art and the music, ingenious and creative ways to use the Vita hardware capabilities as i said before, but it was not the epic adventure I was hoping for. Download the demo and if you like it buy it, in the end you are the best judge.

We give the game an 8 out 10

Real Anime, is there such thing?

Posted by: Cybermario @ 11:50 am Share in Facebook

Hello Anime lovers, today i am going to start by raising a question, is there such a thing as “real anime”? This may be polemical, usually Anime fans have a preference for a genre, name if giant robots, school life, *gasp* Hentai and what not, whatever is your cup of tea. Can you affirm the genre you love is real anime and the rest garbage not worth watching?

I have been watching Anime since the early 90′s and have seen a lot of Shoujo and Shonen genre over the years, never was interested in Yaoi or Hentai, not my cup of tea.. Really I have watched but one Hentai in all my years of being an Otaku, pinky promise.
From classics like Heidi or Candy Candy to Mazinger Z, Gundam, the amazing Saint Seiya and most recently, something i consider a great anime among the many bland and dull stories released last year, that is Steins;Gate.

Steins Gate

Talking to someone recently, I suggested he should watch Steins;Gate, apparently he did watch part of the first episode and the eccentric, strange and often exaggerated attitude of the self proclaimed mad scientist Hououin Kyouma (Okabe Rintarou) made him think the show was not worth his time. Commenting to me that he is more interested in “real anime”, if like me, you were about to flip a table be my guest.
New or old Anime, can we really say a genre or an specific show is real Anime? and I’m not speaking of anime shows animated outside Japan no, but how can some people think the shows they like are the real and only Anime worth to watch, closing the doors to new and unique experiences.

Explosions, blood, violence and giant robots. Long time ago, when Anime was something new in the west, we can agree a lot of people did catalog Anime as something like that? When Anime is much more than that, specially in how directors make the characters full of emotions and personality and tend to think outside the box appealing to the eye and heart of the fans, unlike western animation.

Akira is a great example of the most fine Anime people can experience, yet I know people that believe that movie is utter garbage, means I’m right and they are wrong? I dont think so, it’s just a matter of taste and opinions, as in art… It’s all relative.
Yet, why judge an Anime (which by the way was one of the best in 2011) because one character made you think “wtf?!” that was ignorant, the same as judging a book by it’s cover.

Saint Seiya

I remember I was not fond of school life Anime (I love Mecha, guilty of charge) until my co-admin suggested Clannad and K-On! to me, a bit skeptic, I started to watch the shows and glad to say it was an amazing and pleasant experience, since then I have watched more of this same genre.
People need to stop being narrow minded and stop thinking the Anime shows they like are the right and only “real Anime” to watch, they are losing a great opportunity to expand horizons and broaden the experience of this amazing hobby.

So let me ask you one more time guys, is there such a thing as real Anime, can anyone really dare to say and affirm that? What Anime shows do you like to watch and what shows did you think you’d never like but ended loving in the end? Thanks for reading!

Preview: Confrontation

Posted by: Cybermario @ 9:15 pm Share in Facebook

We’ve had the chance to play a preview build Confrontation Developed by Cyanide Studio. This is a a new tactical strategy RPG title set in a fantasy world known as Aarklash, in which four factions are trying to gain control. The story develops around this rivalry and how new and abominable beings created by the combination of magic and science.
You start as a Griffin squad and your mission is to discover and infiltrate one of the Scorpion Biolabs, not an easy feat as the gloomy and dismal laboratory is full of dangerous bioenginered monsters.

Confrontation

The preview build consists of two missions, the first to assemble your squad, that is scatered in this inhospitable and dangerous land.
The second mission inside one of the laboratories, to find more about the new threat in the war. I can’t say this preview was short at all, after a couple of hours i finished both missions so the full game ensures a good time of enjoyment and gameplay.
As usual in this kind of game you have the classic tank, healer, dps, etc. At first it’s easy to decide the roles as you can play with only 4 members (your first squad from the very first mission) but according to the codex and the classes available it seems we will be able to add more soldiers to our merry squad.

Confrontation

Weaponry, seems to be default and i’m not much a fan of that, although you can select the way your character evolves with different branches that will accomodate your style of play, now that’s something i like!
Confrontation doesn’t seem to offer anything new to the genre but by no means looks like a bad title, classes look pretty balanced to me, then again this is a preview build and until i try the full game I can’t say the rest of the classes are or not balanced, we will see.
Something i liked is a character editor in which you can customize the colors of the members in your squad, although it may not seem significant i love games that let us do customizations to our characters. That is a plus for me and this editor it’s a toy with which will amuse me a lot in this game.
This seems to be a title to keep in mind if you love the RTS genre, specially in the spirit of Diablo or fantasy games of the sort.

Confrontation

Excellent cutscenes narrate the storyline, art and sound in these are very good, if you know me you know i love good stories and narrative, definitely can’t wait to see more of the game and you can be sure we will have a follow up review pretty soon!
