Review – Beyblade: Metal Masters

Posted by: Cybermario @ 10:49 am Share in Facebook

LET IT RIP! Yes we all know what that means (at least those of us into anime) it is another Beyblade videogame! This is the latest installment on the Beyblade franchise, we speak of Beyblade: Metal Masters for the Nintendo DS.
This anime is no stranger to the videogame world and has been present on almost every console, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Playstation and many more.

Beyblade: Metal Masters

Story
Beyblade: Metal Masters is the second in the Metal series of the anime, Ginak and his team of Beybladers are invited to join a tournament but something seems odd, it is held on a cemetery and many contestants are losing their energy and can’t use Beyblade anymore.
What is the mystery behind this fishy tourney? Find out by defeating rival enemies and making it to the finals!
How a villain plans to conquer the world by using Beyblades beats me, but hey everything goes in anime!

Beyblade: Metal Masters

Gameplay
If you played previous Beyblade instalments you know the jazz, if not well the game mechanics are quite simple to be honest, imagine a sort of advanced spin (called Beyblade), and the goal is to destroy your opponent’s Beyblade or take it out of the ring, simple enough?
Beyblades can be highly customizable with different rings to get more power, speed or balance, it all depends on your gameplay style really. Also Beyblades has different special attacks depending the character you chose to play as, some are weaker than others but does not mean they are bad, as i said before it is up to you, your skills, gameplay style and the Beyblade you build in the end what really matters.
The game has a few game modes for you to play with, Arcade (the storyline), here you can fight against teams from the anime while you unlock additional characters to use in your team and new Beyblade parts.
Missions; which are more a sort of tutorial and battles to win in which you will unlock special attacks and new Beyblades for your collection for a total of 100 missions.

Multiplayer; you can play and battle against other players via local multiplayer which is a cool feature, it is always fun to play with friends.
There are a total of 24 achievements you will unlock by playing the game, a gallery to see your parts collection and some other little things but nothing impressive to comment.

Beyblade: Metal Masters

Graphics 7.5/10
As usual the main issue with the graphics is the DS screen isn’t the best around, other than that the Beyblades looks great in 3D and the 2D style anime graphics are eye candy, this of course if you like this show.

Sound 6.5/10
Can say they could have been better, sounds are pretty basic and there is not much variety on the soundtrack.

Downsides
Arcade feels extremely short, this was a major letdown as i expected more hours of gameplay and of the storyline, developers should put a bit more of care. Even as a DS game aimed for a younger audience giving players a videogame that won’t end in the bookshelf after a week would be mroe than welcome.
There are no cutscenes, not even a cool opening video, something that could be good to have, as an anime fan i was expecting to see that as i turned on the DS, alas there was none.

Beyblade: Metal Masters

Overall
Have to admit i enjoyed Beyblade: Metal Masters, i am a fan of the anime and like the franchise, the gameplay is good but extremely short. Although i liked the game this may not be a title everyone will enjoy, mainly fans.
If you like the show and love Beyblade then this game is definitely worth to have in your collection (specially the Special Edition with Beyblade included), otherwise you may want to stay away of it as you may feel dissapointed… LET IT RIP!

We give the game a 6.5 out of 10

Review: Otomedius Excellent (Xbox360)

Posted by: Cybermario @ 8:18 am Share in Facebook

Otomedius Excellent the sequel to Otomedius G; the second in the series but the first to reach American shores, this japanese shmup pays homage to the classic Gradius series and the different spin offs of the classic titles from Konami including Parodius, Salamander, Axelay, Goemon and even the Castlevania games.
The game feels like a love letter from the developers to the fans of not just Gradius, but of all the classic games we loved from Konami over the years. With the anime style graphics, the references to all these games, it’s impossible not to smile when you boot the dvd and start playing Otomedius Excellent, that and… well, big breasts.

Otomedius Excellent

Characters & Ships based on Konami classics

Story
After a really good anime intro that hooks you into playing Otomedius, i really don’t have any idea what the story is about, but all i can say is, Spaceships, a lot of pew pew and anime girls, MOE~! (thanks for the fan service Konami!)
Months after the Gofa Sister’s invasion (Otomedius G) peace has returned and new members have joined the squad. As we know peace is not eternal and a new enemy appears, the students of St. Gradius school have the task to fight bravely against the new menace of the Dark Force, that’s invading planet earth.

Gameplay
Otomedius Excellent arrives to bring a new generation of players a taste of the classic Gradius titles with this 2.5D side scrolling shooter, featuring a story mode, multiplayer and Score Attack.
Story Mode is basically a one player game mode, multiplayer lets you play with up to 3 players offline and online via Xbox Live Arcade, and omg thanks Konami for that! Glad to see companies understand the need to give us both, offline and online multiplayer!
Story Mode and Multiplayer gives us the choice to continue if we run out of lives, with four difficulties; Apprentice, Easy, Normal and Expert. While Score Attack, will be the choice for the purists trying to beat their own score, challenging their abilities as there are no continues at all.

Now the common question, is this a bullet hell? No, it’s not. Producer Koji Igarashi said they wanted to give newcomers a taste of the old Gradius in Otomedius, bullets follow apath just like in the classic Gradius games. Later levels in the game are hard, so don’t think there aren’t tons of bullets on screen.
Boss fights give us a good trip to memory lane, these fights can be difficult especially in the final stages, but who likes a game without any feat to achieve right? So don’t think just because it’s not a bullet hell that the game is bad, not at all, it can be challenging giving although it’s not perfect (see downsides).
There are 11 different characters, including 3 unlockables and one by buying DLC, each character and their respective ship is based in a previous game of the Gradius series and the Konami titles as i mentioned before, as you play throughout campaign and score attack they can level up, experience is based on your final score that can be uploaded to the leaderboards.

Otomedius Excellent

Select your character and customize loadouts

Each character has her own loadouts, but once you select a character you can change loadouts manually and decide the best options to fit your needs and game style. While each of the pilots has her own characteristic attacks, it’s good to mess with the different choices at your disposal; lasers, missiles, dual or tri shots, you name it.

Graphics 8/10
If you think the characters look familiar you are right, character design by Mine Yoshizaki, the creator of Keroro Gunso. This is not the first time he has designed characters for a videogame and he is not stranger to the Gradius universe, he was the designer for Detana!! TwinBee.
People say the graphics look dated, but i have to disagree, i think it looks great. The game was never intended to have high end graphics that would not fit with the cute anime style of the characters, think of it as a game, that should look like an anime not as a realistic environment. Take in mind the title was designed aiming for a Japanese audience, that is into anime and manga. The style of the graphics delivers that for the fans, and do it right.

Sound 8/10
The soundtrack is quite good and the Japanese voice acting is delightful, truly what an anime fan wants in a game like this.

Otomedius Excellent

up to 3 player co-op, offline and via Xbox Live

Downside
I encountered a lot of trouble joining online matches, which is a real shame, many people on the leaderboard, but hardly an online game to join. Probably just me or the time i tried, still i was dissapointed.
Unlimited continues, my god.. ok i get it, you want newcomers to get the feel of the Gradius universe, but why do you give us this option in expert? Why is this not limited for apprentice and easy and for harder difficulties lower the amount of continues. It feels cheap to reach the end of the game in the harder difficulty knowing you have unlimited continues, even if you could lower the amount of continues, specially for expert unlimited continues shouldn’t be there.
Boss battles are not rewarding, why?… Really why? Bosses look amazing, they are challenging and i love them, but why do they have to flee after a time, if you can’t destroy them on time? After you die a lot, after you keep continuing, please give me the joy to see them explode in front of my eyes! Having bosses leave the scene and moving on to the next stage, doesn’t give you much satisfaction. If we get another Otomedius game outside Japan, please don’t do this again.
Sigh.. I dont have the Special Edition, hey… it’s a downside for me!

Extras
No avatar awards or gamerpictures. DLC to unlock Kokoro Belmont (Castlevania) and additional BGM packs are available in the Xbox Live Marketplace for 400MSP each one.

Otomedius Excellent

Fight against cute anime style characters, the boss is coming!

Overall
Otomedius Excellent is a fantastic Shmup, giving fans of the franchise a good game with tons of fun that althought repetivite it does have replay value. Charming characters that appeal to anime fans with a fantastic art gallery, customization loadouts, unlockable characters and very good gameplay.

This title may not be perfect, while hardcore fans of the Shmup genre may not be pleased with unlimited continues, this may be attractive for newcomers and more casual gamers, who are looking to spend a good time playing, without the chore of spending hours training and learning how to beat the game. Still, Otomedius offers hardcore players a challenging Score Attack without continues to brag their highest score in the leaderboards.
So is Otomedius Excellent worth to play? Most definitely! If you like side scrolling shooters and love anime this is a game you cannot miss!

We give the game an 8 out of 10

Review: MLB Bobblehead Battle

Posted by: Cybermario @ 4:09 pm Share in Facebook

It is October and it’s a good month for baseball, so why not grab a ball, a glove and go out to… nah why don’t we just turn on our Xbox 360 and play with MLB Bobblehead Battle from Konami? That’s right, this is the second installment in the MLB Bobblehead series for the Xbox Live Arcade and it’s a lot of fun!

MLB Bobblehead Battle

Gameplay
The second installment in the MLB Bobblehead series is here with the arcade style baseball we loved in the first game, but now there is a cool twist in the gameplay. I’m sure many of you will like!
First this feels less of a baseball title and more a “let’s go crazy and have fun” kind of game, much like Mario Superstar Baseball for the Gamecube and the Wii. The field is like a giant checkers board, well… sort of, with green (single) and orange (out) squares all over, 4 ramps that can send your ball flying away or slamming against one of the many walls in the field. So either you get a home run or the ball can fall in a green or orange square, this is a lot of fun and quite different from the first game.

MLB Bobblehead Battle

The layout of the squares change from time to time keeping the game interesting and fresh, you really can’t figure out where the ball is going to land! So it’s a gamble, even if you hit a really nice swing you can’t end landing on an out. Man i hate how the AI landed on a triple in my last game, grrr!
The game features trading cards (based on the japanese Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu games) and you can do all sort of crazy things with them like using a gigantic bat to increase your chances to hit the ball, special throws at the speed of light and much more.
Just like before all the league teams are available. Something special and worth mentioning is how you can edit the stadiums, i truly loved this feature and is fun to mess with, i like when developers let you play and customize things.
The features from the first game returns as well, letting you pick a quick game, season and more including co-op.
There can only be one! (Insert awesome swords battle here please) Just like in highlander, this game is a one versus one battle, the batter against the pitcher, there are no fielders at all, it’s one of many differences from a standard baseball title, giving it that special something gamers will enjoy.

MLB Bobblehead Battle

Downside
It’s my understanding this game is basically Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu , or at least it’s using elements such as the trading cards in the gameplay mechanics, so why not give us a US release for Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu for the fans of the japanese games? I love imports and having a Jikkyou game released for XBLA would have been awesome!
Aside from that, my only complaint for MLB Bobblehead Battle is the batter box, as a pitcher i have no problem with it at all, easy to use, but as a batter is a bit annoying to move the bat to actually hit the ball, this was the exact issue i had with previous MLB Bobblehead games and sad to see it did not improve. Would be better if it was more like in Nicktoons MLB.

MLB Bobblehead Battle

Extras
Again, no avatar awards or gamer pictures.

Overall
If you love arcade style baseball games and you enjoyed MLB Bobblehead Pros, this is an excellent title for you and a must have in your collection.
MLB Bobblehead Battle is extremely fun with lots of baseball teams to pick from, stadiums you can customize and much more. All in all it’s a fantastic choice to spend a good time playing. Available in the Xbox Live Arcade marketplace for 800 Microsoft Points.

We give the game an 8 out of 10

Review: MLB Bobblehead Pros

Posted by: Cybermario @ 11:20 am Share in Facebook

Hey guys it is America’s favorite pastime, no it’s not fast food… it’s baseball! Fans of the king of sports rejoice as Konami continues to bring fun to the Xbox Live Arcade with MLB Bobblehead Pros, a sweet baseball game that will for sure hook fans of the MLB. Now, don’t let the look of the character mislead you, thinking it’s just a kids game because the game has a lot to offer, gameplay mechanics are good and can easily rival major titles.

Story
Who needs one, it’s baseball… PLAYBALL!

MLB Bobblehead Pros

Strike three, you're out!

Gameplay
MLB Bobblehead Pros is an arcade style baseball game that has a lot to offer. If you loved classics such as Bases Loaded or Baseball Stars this is the right game for you. Konami brings a good baseball game with the Bobbleheads a lot of people seem to love, so arcade style baseball + Bobbleheads, that’s a winning combination there right?
The game features our favorite baseball teams from MLB, so really you can’t complain for a scarse selection of teams or players to play with. Same can be said of the different game modes; exhibition, quick game, season, including co-op modes to play with a friend over Xbox Live. The selection is rich and will not dissapoint.
Controls are very simple and easy to learn, game mechanics not so easy but i’ll cover that later. Pitching was truly enjoyable, there are predefined styles or you can use the analog to throw the ball in a specific direction.
As a batter you have to move a ghost bat with the analog and predict the direction of the ball to actually hit it, not bad but is not perfect either and i would like to see this improved. I definitely liked pitching much more, fielding, well it’s kind of buggy is all i can say.

MLB Bobblehead Pros

Select your favorite teams

When i noticed Power Pros was involved in the development that was a guarantee of a good baseball game. If you are familiar with the Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu series from japan, you know they have been around for a long time, this includes the Superfamicom (snes), Nintendo 64 and of course the Playstation consoles. So these guys know all about the genre.
I wonder why they did not release a Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu for the XBLA, but is understandable the Bobbleheads are more appealing for an US audience. Speaking of graphics they are not bad at all, the detail on the hair and face of the characters is good and they resemble the real players. People on the stadium have their own animations and it’s fun to watch if you hit a homerun.

MLB Bobblehead Pros

Downside
Lack of a tutorial… this is a bummer really, you go right to play without much idea of how things work. There is a digital manual yes, but it’s too long and really is a bit boring to browse all of it when you want to pick and play, having a tutorial would be more enjoyable.
Learning curve, the game mechanics are good but will take time to get used to them as they are not easy, as stated before this is not a kids game. Some people may feel frustrated as the game mechanics are not simple to learn, but once you do the game is enjoyable. Fielding has issues and aside of other bugs here and there they really arent a big concern and dont ruin the experience.

MLB Bobblehead Pros

Extras
No avatar awards or gamer pictures. MLB Bobblehead Stars Add-on available for 400MSP

Overall
Konami offers the fans of baseball a good choice with MLB Bobblehead Pros, if you love the king of sports and enjoy the Bobbleheads, the title has good graphics and definitely a good gameplay. If you dont mind the learning curve you will have a good game in your hands for hours of fun. Available for the Xbox Live Arcade for 800 Microsoft Points.

No More Heroes: Heroes’ Paradise Review

Posted by: Cybermario @ 9:31 am Share in Facebook

Konami brings to our consoles the sequel to the popular No More Heroes. Originally released for the Nintendo Wii, this fantastic game returns to the Playstation 3 as No More Heroes ‘ Heroes Paradise. Taking advantage of the ps3 capabilities the title has had a graphics overhaul and looks stunning.. and hey, nothing beats slicing enemies in two in HD.
An eclectic mix of pixels and 3d, a good deal of blood and humor throughout the game, surreal characters, all this and more offers this striking title!

Story
Travis Touchdown is an assassin, pro wrestler and of course a otaku loving anime and everything moe, but really, who doesnt? Travis must face the challenges to become the number one assassin in the UAA (United Assassin Association) by defeating the top 10 assasins, (not an easy feat!) but with the motivation of like doing it with a girl who can fail?

The concept of the game is not deep but it will make you laugh a lot, the comical humor is a perfect match for the gore and blood. Oh yes, rejoice… the blood was not censured.

Fight against strong bosses

Gameplay
The game is a hack and slash. If you played the Wii version, you know the jazz, and what you will have in your arsenal. You can play with the Move or with your Dual Shock.
Travis can use wrestling moves and of course his beam katana. Initially you only have your beam katana to fight, and you must unlock your wrestler techniques as you kill the bosses.

Enemies can cover and block your attacks, you must learn to use your beam katana to unleash a devastating attack. You can use high and low attacks, learn how to stun your enemies and using a powerful attack can give you extra bonuses.

With an open world style you explore the city of Santa Destroy on your titanic Schpeltiger II. Among the different things you find in the city there is; a clothing store to change the style of Travis, an ATM to deposit money, the shop to upgrade your weapons, Employment Agencies, a gym to improve your offense, defense and stuff of the sort.

No More Heroes 'Heroes Paradise

The agencies are fronts of the UAA to cover up their dirty business, early in the game you start doing third rate jobs such as mowing the lawn, carrying coconuts and other minor jobs. This will gain you prestige with the association and get higher level jobs, you need to perform these to get the money you need and pay the fee to face the assassins in the top 10.

The gym caught my attention in the way in which you improve your skills, recalling some 8-bit games where you had to press the buttons quickly to lift weights before the time expires.
It is worth mentioning that it’s very fun to explore the city on your motorcycle to break down palm trees, mailboxes and other things you can find on the streets. But despite this there is not much to do, except find some hidden objects in some areas of the city.

The fights against the various bosses are varied and in some cases with a good challenge. (It would be bad if it were not so!) Each boss has a peculiar and unique style. These fights are one of the strong points of the game and they will not dissapoint.

Moe...! im sure the guy in the back thinks the same

Downsides
Although the game has enough positive things you can not cover the sun with a finger, there are bugs from the Wii version, which should have been fixed.
The controls are not bad but could be better. I have no complaints about how they work to fight or perform attacks, in that respect I do not think they’re so bad. But to move around the different areas there i do have to complain because they feel somewhat clunky, you can notice it in narrow areas like corridors or stairs.

Another thing that I feel doesn’t have a real excuse, (other than lack of attention of the developers) is the collision detection, going at high speed on your bike and you crash, you are thrown off your bike. But when you go slowly and you cross paths with a car, your bike magically moves to the side of the car.

Catch the eye the low activity in the city, few cars and few pedestrians. Remember how the Dead Rising for the Wii had 3 or 4 zombies on screen due to poor power of the system compared to the Xbox 360 with hordes on screen?
I feel the lack of activity in the city is due to this, but with the power of a console like the PS3, it should have been improved giving the city more content.
Even though the game has improved graphics it’s a shame that it only has 720p and not 1080p. Although I can live with that resolution, it would have been good to have the maximum resolution.

8-bit games…. where? sad face.

Extras
This version contains a number of trophies for the enjoyment of players. In addition to an Attack Score after beating Death Metal.
A new game mode you can unlock after beating the game for the first time, in which you can start with your skills and enhanced weapons to the max.

Charge the beam katana by shaking the Move or Control Pad

Overall
No More Heroes’ Heroes Paradise is a very good option, no doubt. With a strong influence of movies, and characters of pop culture. It is hard not to enjoy the different aspects of the game. (Did i mention that you save the game by going to the toilet?) From the shelves in his room full of anime figures, trading cards and game systems, to bosses that remind us Charles Bronson or Kill Bill.
Being a fan of retro gaming of course the presentation was to my liking, the mixture of different menus with a style reminiscent of the age of 8 and 16 bit is great.

The cool sense of humor that complements the bloody gameplay, quality music tracks, plus many things to discover and collect throughout the game. In spite of certain issues that could have been better for this remake, the game has more merit than defects and it’s worth having in your collection (minimum, do yourself a favor and Download the demo). For more screenshots please visit our Image Gallery, thanks for reading!

We give the game a 8.5 out of 10
