Review: One Epic Game (PSP Minis)

Posted by: Cybermario @ 5:04 am Share in Facebook

Released on august 2nd of 2011 (U.S.A) and developed by Grip Games we have One Epic Game, no.. that’s his name really! With a very good dose of humour, parodies of both games and movies the game offer a lot playability for those looking for a game they can pick and play on the go.

One Epic Game

Story
Zombie outbreaks, alien invaders, time travels and a villain that is trying to conquer the world, who can stop this? A very badass hero that well could it be Sledge Hammer on steroids, he is a badass!

Gameplay
This is a side scrolling platformer, the way the game works it’s quite simple but does the job, after all we are talking of a PSP Mini so it’s all good.
There is Story Mode, Free Run, Challenges and a Hall of Fame. As you progress in Story Mode, each stage is then unlocked in Free Run. Challenges are not easy but i guess they add a reason to replay some stages.
Some include “Survivor” which gives you only one life, yeah, one hit and you are dead.”Pacifist” you have to reach the end without killing enemies. “Surgeon” that’s killing only marked enemies and so on. There is a nice amount of these challenges to pick from.
By default you have four hearts, each time you are hit by an enemy you lose a heart, so 4 hits and baaam, you are dead meat.
You also have a gun by default, but you can find others in each stage including flame throwers, machineguns, bazookas, etc. As well as powerups like Jetpacks, slowing or increasing speed, remember in this game your characters is always running and cannot be stopped, so these last can be a two edged sword.

One Epic Game

Enemies can be killed by using weapons or by jumping on them, pure Mario style, one of many videogame references you can find in this game.
The layouts of the stages changes if you die, this adds a challenge as you will not be able to memorize the pattern, this is something i truly liked.
Controls are very simple but they do the job, you have a regular jump and a high jump by holding down the button shoulder and X to shoot your weapon, that’s it.

One Epic Game

Graphics 8/10
One Epic Games for sure has a strong presentation, the comic book graphic style for the menus and the cut scenes are quite good along with the character design, is really cool to watch the cutscenes, especially with the dose of humor the developers added to them.
Level design is also unique, each stage has different themes, from desert landscapes to a city invaded with aliens to a medieval castle. Definitely and taking in mind this is a PSP Mini it’s pleasant to the eyes.

Sound 7/10
Soundtrack is not so shabby either, cool upbeat fast paced music tracks complement the gameplay so well, one more time, for a PSP Mini is not bad, something other developers should learn to do.

Downsides
Repetitive, even when each stage has different enemies and theatrics the gameplay can get to you after a while.
I have to be honest, the game is truly unforgiving and asks a lot of perfection on the jumping, a regular jump or a long jump out of place could mean death, this can be very frustrating, especially if you die a lot in one single stage. But let’s be fair, what would be the point if the game was easy peasy, right?

One Epic Game

Overall
Among all the PSP minis on the market, One Epic Game is addictive, fun and appealing, one title that delivers what it promises, epic gameplay! If you like games with a funny story and humor, a hero with an attitude, challenge and affordable price. Then this is a game you have to get in your psp.
One Epic Game is available in the Playstation Network for $1.99 and if you dont own a ps3 or PSP dont worry, it’s also available for iPhone and Android devices, no excuse to miss an addictive title like this.

Giving the game an 8 out of 10

Sumioni: Demon Arts Review (Vita)

Posted by: Cybermario @ 8:56 pm Share in Facebook

Developed by Acquire and XSEED Games we have got this new adventure for the PS Vita called Sumioni: Demon Arts. With an Okami dejavu and a creative use of the hardware capabilities of the portable, this game takes us back to the ancient feudal Japan, fighting armies, mythical beasts and what not. Does this title have what it takes to keep you entertained? Let’s find out!

Sumioni

Gameplay
Sumioni takes us back to ancient Japan, as we take contol of this demon ink like character named Agura in a side scrolling game for the PS Vita. After years of slumber Agura wakes up to destroy an evil force in the ancient Japan.
Controls feel good, by using the left analog you can move, x to jump and square to attack, simple as that and without a big learning curve, simple pick up and play. Sumioni makes use of the touch-screen in a very creative way, by using your finger you can draw ink lines to help you kill enemies, avoid deadly traps, reach higher areas and so on. You can also delete your lines with your finger but they disappear by themselves after a time.
Ink is not infinite, you get ink jars as you destroy objects, enemies and overall everything in the enviroment, as well ying yang symbols.

Sumioni

Although you can’t lose time by stopping to destroy everything in your path as some stages require you to dash through it fast.
By using ink you can draw symbols and with them summon beasts to aid you in battle and unleash powerful attacks, but that is not all, by drawing over an enemy it can set the ink on fire, damaging monsters, something i’m in love with!
Ink is not the only weapon you have at your disposal, you can use water to delete ink or to put out fire to avoid damage, just like ink you use water with your finger, pretty handy.
The game has a ranking system by using stars from one (poor) to three (excellent). Obtaining three stars will unlock new paths to advance and progress to get one of six different endings. I will elaborate more on this below.

You will find yourself fighting giants, archers, soldiers and destroying fortifications and castles, some levels can get really tough giving the player a good challenge and that is always welcomed.

Sumioni

Graphics 8.5/10
The graphics for Sumioni are delightful, specially if you like traditional Japanese art like that one well known scroll of the ancient Japan known as Sumi-e. Graphics are not bland blank and white but there are gorgeous and colorful backgrounds and effects, giving the game a very unique style. What else can we say but eye candy! Gorgeous, simply gorgeous!

Music 8/10
Just like the art the music is a mix of both, traditional and catchy modern tunes with sounds that are so typical of the Japanese culture and they complement gameplay to perfection.

Sumioni

Downsides
If any, Sumioni opening is composed of still images, although the art is pretty good all you see for over 3 minutes is an intro composed of images and lots, lots of text… usually I don’t mind but really this does not make you feel immersed or interested in the storyline that much, it can be quite boring.
Some bosses appear to be just upgraded versions of early bosses, more variety would have been beneficial in both variety and replay value, once you learn to defeat some of the early bosses, the improved versions are not so hard.
As amusing and interesting the use of ink can be, after a time you will find yourself using the same patterns or lines to move forward which tend to be repetitive after a while.
The stars system can be a real pain as you need to score perfect to unlock a new path, if you don’t do it you will never be able to see all the endings nor enjoy the full experience and this can lead to frustration. Nobody likes to finish a game under 25 minutes just because you can’t score perfect right?

Sumioni

Overall
Sumioni: Demon Arts although it’s not a excellent title, it is a good choice with interesting gameplay, if you own a Vita it’s worth to give it a try. This franchise promises a lot and maybe if they can improve and nail down their mistakes on this release they could bring us an amazing sequel.
Can’t say I hate the game as i’m in love with the art and the music, ingenious and creative ways to use the Vita hardware capabilities as i said before, but it was not the epic adventure I was hoping for. Download the demo and if you like it buy it, in the end you are the best judge.

We give the game an 8 out 10

Review – PAYDAY: The Heist

Posted by: Cybermario @ 3:20 pm Share in Facebook

PAYDAY:The Heist developed by Overkill Software, comes to our consoles (or PC, whatever is your cup of tea) with an original concept that is certainly entertaining, this time we get to play as the bad guys, and oh boy… It is fun!
With a unique style that reminds us of a lot movies like Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs or Point Break. PAYDAY: The Heist offers very dynamic gameplay and action that is clearly influenced by Left 4 Dead (by no means this is bad at all), i like it.

payday: the heist

Gameplay
This is a cooperative FPS featuring 6 different heists with a good variety of objectives, from robbing a bank, hunt down a traitor in the streets while you face the cops or even taking money from a meth lab and more. As stated before the L4D influence is undeniable, but instead of brainless zombies you have to deal with waves of cops and swat teams.
This is more evident if you decide to play offline teaming with the AI to complete a heist, just like in L4D the AI can heal you if you are injured. This option is not bad although an AI cannot beat playing online with other players. Co-op is the strong point in a game like this and you should aim to play online. Advice to grab a mic as communication is important to assign tasks and complete a heist smoothly, specially in harder difficulty.

Four difficulty levels ranging from Easy to Overkill, here comes something interesting, some of the latter heists dont let you pick easy or normal, you have to choose hard or Overkill. This sure gives you a nice challenge and believe me… hard will give you a run for your money, and good luck picking overkill!
There are four characters to choose: Dallas, Wolf, Hoxton and Chains. As far i can tell there are no differences between the characters stats wise, except of course the masks they are wearing. Dallas mask being my favorite.

payday: the heist

With that said from the main menu you can check both, active and completed challenges and the upgrades you obtained throughout the game as your reputation level up.
As you obtain upgrades your choices before a heist increase considerably, so you can either pick to carry more cables to tie hostages, bags with extra ammo or meds, or obtaining boosts such as “thicker skin” to increase your health, accuracy and armor bonuses, etc.
There are three different categories of upgrades: Assault, Sharpshooting and Support. So you can build a character based in your very own game style, in the end the choice is yours.
The music score fits like a glove, with intense rhythm that keeps an atmosphere of tension in each heist.

payday: the heist

Downsides
The lobby not always has a good amount of games to join, around 5pm i tried for a bit and gave up.. ending playing offline with the AI, this changed the next morning and was able to select from a fair amount of games. So give or take seems you can’t always find a game to join.
Are there plans for cross platform in the future? Having this on both Playstation 3 and Steam, this is an option that should be included, it would benefit the community increasing your chances to find games to join.

payday: the heist

Overall
PAYDAY: The Heist offers tons of replayability and multiplayer feels just great, kudos and praises to Overkill Software, they did a game that really is a blast!
So really if you are a passionate gamer into FPS’s and like games in the style of Left 4 Dead or Team Fortresss you must give PAYDAY: The Heist a chance, im sure you will not regret it. Available for the Playstation Network and Steam for $19.99.

We give the game an 8.5 out of 10

Review: Dungeon Defenders

Posted by: Cybermario @ 1:12 pm Share in Facebook

There has been nice tower defence games over the past months, but few as good and exciting as this one. After a long year the wait is over and fans all over the world can enjoy this fantastic title, we speak of Dungeon Defenders! The popular title for mobile devices has finally arrived to Xbox Live Arcade, Steam and Playstation Network, and did it with a blast.
The game did surpass all my expectations, what appeared to be one of many cute looking games with a twist of RPG turned out to be a fabulous and highly addictive tower defense, action, strategy RPG with much life ahead and tons… TONS of fun!

Story
Some brave heroes trapped evil and powerful forces inside magical crystals, one day the heroes leave the kingdom and the young and inexpert younglings are in charge of the castle until their return.
One day cleaning and playing around, by accident they release the evil powers trapped inside a magic crystal. Now it’s up to them to defeat hordes of; orcs, evil wizards, ogres, demon lords and vicious terrible dragons, to one more time return peace and order to the kingdom of Etheria.
Heck! This is how Home Alone the movie should have been, dont you think so? who needs a pair of silly thieves when you have waves of monsters!

Dungeon Defenders

Gameplay
As i said before this is a tower defense game. You build defenses and use magic to defent the Eternia Crystals, melee and ranged attack to defend the magical crystals from wave after wave of monsters. Featuring 15 different maps, 30 challenges and 4 difficulties going from Easy to Insane. But what makes this game stand apart from the rest? There is a lot we can say about the game but lets start with the different classes you can choose from.

Monk: The first class i tried, monks can summon auras, including; Lightning Auras to damage enemies, Ensnare Aura to slow the advance of the monsters, Enrage Auras turn monsters against each other, Healing Auras that are excellent to cure your allies and Strenght Drain aura that lower the attack power of the enemies.
Monk is not as powerful as the squire but is good with his ranged and melee attacks, knowing how to combine both can make a monk a killing machine. Also a fantastic class that can also provide support due to healing auras.
Huntress: This class is good with ranged attacks and laying traps; Gas Trap makes monsters stop, Proximity Mines explode when monsters get close, Inferno Traps burn all the nearby monsters, Darkness Traps blind enemies and Ethereal Traps are good against aereal assaults.
They can do massive damage as they increase their attack speed, not so good at close combat at low levels. Once they get a decent level they can be totally lethal, you dont want to challenge one in PvP believe me.
Their traps unlike other towers need to be repaired often, as they have 2 or more uses depending the amount of upgrades.
Squire: Slice N Dice blockade,Bowling Ball Turret, Bouncer Blockades that send enemies flying away, Spiked Blockade that harm enemies and Harpoon Turrets against aerial attacks. By far some of the most efficient towers as they can harm monsters with element resistance.
The squire is a real power horse and a tank for excellency, their power is unrivaled and they can take entire hordes at close combat alone. Unlike Monk and Apprentice, Squires cannot use magic or ranged attacks.
Apprentice: Deadly Striker towers, fireball tower, lightning tower, magic blockades and (forgot the name, adding it later lol ). After Squire, the Apprentice class is the second most versatile in the game in my opinion, with towers that can stop aerial attacks and elemental cannons to counter elemental resistance, plus their magic powers they can be really powerful if you level it properly, beware of Mana Bomb!

Dungeon Defenders

Now, don’t think you can choose the most powerful class and beat the game alone, you cant. The game promotes and is aimed for co-op, having the right combination of classes is what will get in your hands the sweet victory and the godly loot.. Oh, the godly loot!
Having communication and team work is important to beat a stage, and of course the game. This is not a game to solo or to play kamikaze, strategy is a key factor and if you lack of it.. well, you have a lot to learn youngling!

I did mention the loot, well let me tell you, there are amazing amounts of armors and weapons. Either by buying them in the tavern or by having them drop during a stage, there are different kinds of quality ranging from cursed to godly items and if you can get your hands on a complete set, you will earn special bonuses.
That is not all, every weapon can be upgraded, so if you get a good weapon with a few negative bonuses you can invest to upgrade the weapon to either remove them or to increase the positive bonuses.

Just like gears and weapons you can obtain pets, which can also be upgraded for even more stats, attack power or defense. Pixies, Dragons, Guardians, Angels and more.
Boss fights, what can i say, but epic and creative? At the same time you fight the boss, you also fight a last wave of monsters, it can be pretty intense, imagine repairing, upgrading and rebuilding while you fight a giant mecha, a demon lord or a giant dragon? The boss fights deserve a lot of praise, original and challenging.
As a prize for your efforts you can obtain weapons, armors or even pets by defeating bosses and by completing challenges, with harder difficulty better the rewards.

The Tavern: This is your very personal lobby, here you can buy/sell pets, weapons and all the loot you don’t want. Also you can reset your stats and reassign points, get an extra level and change your character name, for a certain price of course, and it wont be cheap.
Also you are not limited to 4 slots, you can have 5, 8 or more characters (but only 4 classes) but in my opinion with the reset stats option, you don’t need more than one of the same class.

Dungeon Defenders

Downsides
Although each class has his advantages and disatvantages clearly not all the classes have equal chances to solo or duo a level like the squire class do. Their mechanical defenses are perfect for monsters with an element resistant like electricity or fire, something Huntress and Monks dont have.
Certainly each class is different and there are ways to compensate but is a bit unfair how a squire can grind and stand still without doing much on certain stages to get better gears unlike the other 3. Taking in mind you will end up creating all 4 classes this may not be much of an issue right?

Dungeon Defenders is not bug free, this can be noticed when you jump near walls, a corner or near your own defenses. It’s easy to get stuck and this is bad when you are trying to reach the safety when attacked by tons of monsters.
Trendy Entertainment is not offering cross platform for this version of the game, unlike Steam, Playstaion 3 (coming soon) and mobile devices. This of course is not to blame the developers but Microsoft.. alas.
Argh why guys… why, no avatar awards or gamer pictures for Xbox 360… Steam users got Team Fortress and Portal exclusives, please throw us a bone!

Extras
We have great news for you all, the developers are already working on DLC for the XBLA version of the game, meaning the craziness and insane fun will get better. This will include new stages for campaign, pvp challenges and more.
Like the tavern? Well start messing around with the camera angles and start searching all the easter eggs! tip: Troll Face. There is also a very special surprise waiting for you in the tavern once you finish the game, sorry no.. no spoilers!

Dungeon Defenders

Overall
There is so much to say about the game, doesn’t only look good but has great gameplay and replay value. Good music, a fantastic campaign, lots of challenges and unlockables. Without a doubt we can say this is the best tower defense game that has seen the light in a long time, the best and only way to enjoy a title like this is with friends, and this is the strong point of Dungeon Defenders, multiplayer at its best.

If you love the genre and don’t mind grinding while you kill hordes of monster this is a title you must not miss, or if you are new and curious about tower defense games, Dungeon Defenders will hook you and make you a fan of tower defense. Do yourself a favor and please, buy this game!

Available for Xbox LIVE Arcade for 1200 Microsoft Points, on PlayStation Network and Steam for $14.99

We give the game a 9 out of 10!
